ATLAS RETREAT
SHOREHAM, VICTORIA
The project brief evolved from the securing of a vacant parcel of land that was within close vicinity of the client’s favourite surf break. ‘Atlas Retreat’ is a tranquil property in a small local community where the bush meets the sea. A unique beach haven.
The idea behind the design was to be able to accommodate multiple user groups in larger ‘lodge’ style accommodation, whether it be a group of friends or a couple of families. Whilst ensuring larger areas were formed, many secluded and quiet nooks were also included for those seeking privacy and solitude. There was an opportunity to design separate living and break-out spaces, each with its own identity and design intent, however ensuring they all work together as a collective, creating balance, harmony, and flow throughout the space. It was intended to engage and enhance the user experience by drawing in the external elements of the outside environment into these spaces, creating an indoor/outdoor ebb and flow, feeling connected as one with nature. This intent was utilized by offering floor-to-ceiling glass windows that line both the east and west walls, flooding the home with fresh air and offering an uninterrupted view amongst the treetops and Western Port Bay in the distance, with an abundance of natural light.
The owner has always had a special connection with the Mornington Peninsula location and took this opportunity to create ‘Atlas Retreat’. The property provides families, friends, organisations & charity groups with the time to rest, relax, and restore & utilise the facilities & services that the local community has to offer.
Guests have been able to enjoy having the option of choosing their particular style of living comfort made available to them in the large living/dining space on the 1st floor. Whether it be sitting at the kitchen island bench, lounging in the sitting room with a glass of red, or sitting at the dining table out on the deck overlooking the treetops.
The health and wellbeing options accommodate users to access all the amenities for all seasons of the year. With the cool outdoor pool during summer, to the heated spa bath for those cold winter days. Indoor living with the climate-controlled environment or the ‘floating amongst the tree canopies’ outdoor dining experience on the deck.
There have been a number of groups who have already had the unique opportunity to stay at this property, and it brings so much pleasure to the client to hear the glowing reviews and comments detailing their experience staying in this ‘home away from home’.
